Top Stories Election 2020: PPP to Drop Nduom for Prof Gyampo as Flagbearer?

Head of European Studies at the Department of Political Science in the University of Ghana, Prof Ransford Yaw Gyampo will likely appear on the ballot paper as the flagbearer for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in the December polls.

GhanaNewsPage.Com reports that the lecturer who can be described as one of chief critics of the Nana Akufo-Addo administration will be selected by the PPP as its flagbearer for the 2020 elections which is less than six months away.

The decision follows belief among some leading PPP members that the founder and leader of the party, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom would likely not contest the 2020 polls as a presidential candidate.

Dr Nduom since the founding of the party in 2012 has been the face of the party contesting that year’s election and the 2016 elections.

In 2012, Dr Nduom polled 64,267 representing 0.58% of valid votes cast. His votes however appreciated in the 2016 as he polled 113,240 representing 1.07%.

These percentages are however not significant enough to qualify as a viable third force in Ghana’s politics.

It was expected that the businessman would contest the 2016 for a third time but information that reached this website indicate that the PPP is considering changing him as a flagbearer.

Reasons that were cited include Dr Nduom’s seeming lack of interest in the Presidential race following the collapse of several of his businesses including the GN Bank.

Our Political Desk further gathered that Dr Nduom is currently not in the country and with the borders still shut, it’s uncertain when he will return to Ghana from his base in the USA.

With time fast approaching and the campaign for the December polls heating up, the PPP cannot afford to remain dormant.

The party is said to be considering selecting a new candidate and Dr Ransford Gyamfo we gathered further is among the leading contestants for the position of flagbearer.

The academic, according to our checks, has been a card bearing member of the PPP in good standing for sometime now.

However, what remains a headache for the party, GhanaNewsPage.Com gathered further is the recent BBC documentary on sex for grades which captured him as one of the worst culprits.

He was suspended by the University as a result but the suspension will likely not affect his chances of being the flagbearer of the PPP.
